Benefits of Using a Steel Building

Building with steel is becoming an increasingly popular phenomenon as more and more companies and governments discover the advantages of steel buildings. Steel, an iron-carbon alloy, is used for a wide range of purposes ranging form heavy industry to the household, and is practical for many applications. Steel buildings have various advantages over the more traditional wood and concrete structures, and the benefits range from the relative ease of construction all the way to environmental issues.

Once thought of as only suitable for large, impersonal storage structures like silos or aircraft hangars, steel is now used for a range of buildings, large and small. Pre-engineered steel buildings are now a prime choice in the building of schools, churches, recreation centres, arenas and fire stations. New options in exterior finishes and facades mean that steel structures need no longer look like a barn or a hangar. While other structural options are available, steel still makes a great choice for uses that require making the most of interior space due to the absence of columns and other support structures.

Because its pieces are prefabricated and engineering to be assembled easily, future steel buildings require less specialized labour in its assembly, and the whole building process can be completed in less time. A steel building can become productive more quickly than a wood or concrete structure. In the long run, steel results in lowered repair costs due to its durability. Though steel’s main enemy is rust and corrosion, technological developments in metallic and organic coatings can ensure that the structure will stand the test of time.
Once a steel building has run through its life cycle, the steel inside can be recycled into other products. In fact, steel is one of the most recycled elements in the world. The construction of a steel building can be achieved more quietly and cleanly than those involving wood or concrete structures. Steel buildings also permit the use of more glass on the exterior of the building, which brings in more light and reduces the building’s overall energy consumption. The increased natural light is also a benefit for the occupants of steel buildings, as it makes the typical office or work environment more pleasant.

For the environmentally conscious, steel is an ideal material due to its ability to be recycled and to be constructed from recycled materials. Some may view steel as cold, impersonal and anything but environmentally friendly, but the reverse is actually true. Recycled materials, energy savings, cleaner constructions sites and a longer life make steel buildings an ideal choice for environmental construction.

In regions affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes, future steel buildings can save lives and money. Its strength and flexibility give it increased resistance to these naturally occurring phenomena compared to wood and concrete. A collapsed wooden or concrete structure is often the cause of fatalities and injuries. Steel structures can save lives that otherwise would be lost due to collapse.
