Boise State Broncos Football – A Move That’s For The Best
Boise State University used to be represented in the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) by the Boise State Broncos. The Broncos were made famous by their 13-0 WAC championship in 2006. This was followed by their overtime win against the Oklahoma Sooners during the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. In 2009, The Broncos became the second college football team to end a season with a score of 14-0. In the succeeding 2010 Fiesta Bowl they defeated the TCU Horned Frogs, previously undefeated.
A healthy spirit of competition was present from the start between Boise and Idaho Universities. By 2008 the competitiveness had developed into rivalry. A publication of Idaho University featured an opinion-generating article listing down some ‘good’ reasons for hating Boise University and its team. For Poise President Bob Kustra, that was the end of the line. He promptly took measures to have his team switch camps to the Mountain West Conference for the 2011 season. This is in an effort to prevent the opposing teams meeting each other in the preliminaries.
Even if the issue about the controversial publication is all over the media and the internet, others think the reaction of the Boise president was not called for. Whoever may be right, one thing is certain. The Broncos won’t be competing against the Idaho team in the 2011 conference. But what is to prevent them from meeting up at the finals?
The Boise team holds the record for uninterrupted wins. All in all it has achieved 22 of these. Additionally, they have the greatest number of wins, totaling 14 in all, for one season. As well, they have the highest margin of points over the losing team in the first Division of the NCAA. This is their 74 point edge over Humboldt State
The team’s career records are impressive. Among these are the record of passing yards, held by Ryan Din Widdie with 9,819 all in all. The same person holds the top slot for passing touchdowns. The first place for rushing yards is held by Cedric Minter with a value of 4,457. The record for rushing touchdowns is retained by Ian Johnson who has a total of 58 of these to his name. Ryan Ikebe is on top for receiving yards, totaling 2,741 times.
Like wise the team has a number of single game records. The person with the most passing yards in one game for 2003 is Ryan Dinwiddie with 532. The person with the most passing touchdowns in one game in 1974 was Jim McMillan with 6. The person with the most all-purpose offense in one game is Brock Forsey in 2000 with 292. The team also had the highest points in one game in 2003 with 77 points versus San Jose State.
A number of wins have also been scored in Division I-A Bowl Game Appearances. The Humanitarian Bowl of 1999 was the first. This was followed by a win in the same event in the following year and then two years after that in 2002. The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl of 2007 and 2010 was also dominated by them.
The title of All-American player has also been awarded to several of the team members..
